Ketamine Assisted Psychotherapy
Ketamine Assisted Psychotherapy
Ketamine-Assisted Psychotherapy (KAP) in Colorado
Ketamine Therapy with Preparation, Support, and Integration
Ketamine-Assisted Psychotherapy (KAP) combines medically prescribed ketamine treatment with psychotherapy to support meaningful emotional and psychological change.
For some people, ketamine can create a temporary shift in perspective, increase psychological flexibility, and provide access to thoughts, emotions, memories, and experiences that may be difficult to explore through traditional talk therapy alone. Psychotherapy helps provide the preparation, support, and integration needed to make meaning from the experience and connect insights to your everyday life.
I offer Ketamine-Assisted Psychotherapy for eligible adults in Colorado through a collaborative model with Skylight Psychedelics, which provides the medical evaluation, prescription, and ongoing medical monitoring. I provide the psychotherapy preparation, KAP journey support, and integration therapy.
KAP may be helpful for people experiencing depression, anxiety, PTSD, trauma-related symptoms, and other concerns that have not fully improved with traditional treatment. Ketamine is not right for everyone, and medical eligibility is determined by the prescribing medical team.
What Is Ketamine-Assisted Psychotherapy?
Ketamine-Assisted Psychotherapy is a therapeutic approach that combines:
Medical evaluation and prescribing
Ketamine preparation sessions
A supported ketamine experience
Psychotherapy and integration sessions
The goal is not simply to take ketamine. The therapeutic process includes preparation beforehand and integration afterward.
During preparation sessions, we discuss your goals, concerns, expectations, and intentions. During the KAP journey session, I provide a supportive therapeutic presence while you experience the effects of the prescribed ketamine. During integration sessions, we explore the thoughts, emotions, memories, sensations, images, and insights that arose during the experience.
Together, these steps can help you reflect on your experience and consider how to apply new perspectives and insights to your life.
How Can Ketamine-Assisted Therapy Help?
People seek KAP for many reasons, including:
Depression
Anxiety
PTSD and trauma-related symptoms
Feeling stuck in longstanding emotional patterns
Difficulty gaining new perspective through traditional talk therapy
A desire to explore new possibilities for healing and personal growth
Some people report experiencing greater hope, perspective, connection, emotional flexibility, or insight following ketamine treatment. Individual experiences and results vary.
Ketamine-assisted psychotherapy is not a guaranteed treatment and is not appropriate for everyone. A medical evaluation is required to determine whether ketamine treatment is appropriate for you.
What Is Ketamine?
Ketamine is a medication that has been used in medical settings for many years. It is also used under medical supervision for certain mental health conditions, including depression and other treatment-resistant symptoms.
For Ketamine-Assisted Psychotherapy, ketamine is prescribed and medically managed by the medical team at Skylight Psychedelics. I work with the sublingual lozenge form of ketamine prescribed through their program.
The medical team will review your medical and psychiatric history, determine whether you are medically eligible, provide education about the medication, and establish an appropriate treatment and monitoring plan.
Ketamine is a prescription medication and should only be used as directed by a qualified medical professional.
What Is a Ketamine Journey Like?
The experience of ketamine varies from person to person and from session to session.
During a KAP journey session, you will be in a comfortable reclining position, typically using an eye mask and calming music. The experience is often primarily internal and may involve changes in perception, emotions, memories, thoughts, or sensations.
You may experience a shift in your usual sense of time, body awareness, or perspective. Some people describe the experience as expansive, meaningful, or emotionally significant. Others may experience challenging emotions or memories.
You do not need to force the experience to make sense while it is happening. I will be present to provide support and help you remain connected to your intention and the process.
After the acute effects of ketamine have subsided, integration therapy provides an opportunity to reflect on and process your experience.
How Does Ketamine-Assisted Psychotherapy Work?
Step 1: Free Consultation
We begin with a free 15-minute consultation to discuss your goals, questions, and whether KAP may be an appropriate next step.
If KAP appears to be a possible fit, we will discuss scheduling an initial therapy appointment.
Step 2: Medical Evaluation with Skylight Psychedelics
You will schedule a virtual medical evaluation with Skylight Psychedelics.
Their medical team will:
Review your medical and psychiatric history
Discuss the potential benefits and risks of ketamine
Determine whether you are medically eligible
Develop an individualized treatment and monitoring plan
Prescribe ketamine if appropriate
The medical team will also provide instructions for safely storing and using your prescribed ketamine lozenges.
Step 3: Preparation Therapy
Before your first KAP journey session, we will meet for preparation therapy sessions.
Preparation may include discussing:
Your goals and hopes for treatment
Questions or concerns about ketamine
Your personal history and current challenges
How to approach the experience
Intentions for your KAP session
Strategies for feeling grounded and supported
Preparation helps establish a strong therapeutic foundation before the ketamine experience.
Step 4: Ketamine-Assisted Psychotherapy Journey Session
A typical KAP journey session lasts approximately 2.5–3 hours.
Sessions may take place in person in Arvada, Colorado, or remotely through telehealth when appropriate.
During the session, you will self-administer your prescribed ketamine lozenge according to the instructions provided by the medical team. You will rest in a comfortable position, typically using an eye mask and calming music.
I will be present throughout the session to provide therapeutic support and hold a safe, supportive space for your experience.
For virtual sessions, you will need a trusted, sober support person nearby for the duration of the session. Additional preparation and safety requirements may apply.
Step 5: Integration Therapy
Integration therapy is an important part of the KAP process.
During integration sessions, we may explore:
Thoughts and insights
Memories
Emotions
Body sensations
Images or symbolic experiences
Changes in perspective
New possibilities
Challenges that arose during the journey
We will consider how your experience connects to your goals and how you may incorporate meaningful insights into your daily life.
Integration sessions may be used alongside your existing therapist or treatment team when appropriate.
Step 6: Ongoing Medical Follow-Up
After beginning ketamine treatment, the Skylight Psychedelics medical team provides ongoing medical follow-up and determines whether additional prescriptions or refills are appropriate.
Medical follow-up and monitoring are managed by the prescribing medical team according to your individual treatment plan.
